The year was 1721. All colonists were loyal to the British crown, and on April 14 when John Hanson was born, his family was no exception.
The Hanson family dates back hundreds of years, and have been highly influential throughout history. According to Grant, George, "The Forgotten Presidents" (excerpted from "The Patriot's Handbook"):
The Hanson family dates back hundreds of years, and have been highly influential throughout history. According to Grant, George, "The Forgotten Presidents" (excerpted from "The Patriot's Handbook"):
"He was the heir of one of the greatest family traditions in the colonies and became the patriarch of a long line of American patriots – his great-grandfather died at Lutzen beside the great King Gustavus Aldophus of Sweden; his grandfather was one of the founders of New Sweden along the Delaware River in Maryland; one of his nephews was the military secretary to George Washington; another was a signer of the Declaration; still another was a signer of the Constitution; yet another was Governor of Maryland during the Revolution; and still another was a member of the first Congress; two sons were killed in action with the Continental Army; a grandson served as a member of Congress under the new Constitution; and another grandson was a Maryland Senator."- George Grant, "The forgotten presidents"
According to this excerpt, the John Hanson family itself has dedicated much to the founding of America. He taught himself the principles of philosophy that inspired many of the ideas that would lead to the Revolution. His father was an influential man in Maryland himself as a well-respected politician. John Hanson could owe some of his success as a politician himself to his father's connections.
Over the years Hanson took up different positions in the government, each more important than the last. Overtime he built up a respect in politic himself, like his Father, and by this time trouble was brewing. He was an active part in the Patriotic efforts beginning to sweep the colonies. He was a part of (and actively voiced his opinion in) the Maryland Stamp Act Congress. Not only that, but when war finally broke out in the colonies, he was the first to dispatch troops to aid Washington's army.
*FUN FACT: John Hanson's Mulberry Grove plantation was just across the Potomac River from George Washington's Mount Vernon (they were good friends).
Already, he is playing a major role in American politics, but the story of John Hanson has just begun.
